Tips and Tricks for Keeping A Journal

Hello and welcome to this week’s blog post! If you are a new reader, be sure to browse my page for more posts like this. If you are a returning reader, then welcome back. This week I am furthering my thoughts and discussion on mental health and self-care. I wanted to continue this discussion by providing some tips and tricks for keeping a journal. Keeping a journal is one of the ways I practice mental wellness. I like to try and do daily reflections, sometimes I do morning and night inputs. Most days I get out a morning reflection only. No matter how many daily entries I do, it still helps me get things out of my head and clear my head.

GOALS

Goals are a way to get things off your mind. I like to set daily goals and tasks of what I would like to accomplish that day, as well as long-term goals to accomplish in the week, month, or current year. It is also a pleaser to set goals for this time next year and goals for where I hope to be further down the road. I suggest starting with small goals that lead into the big goals. Goals are a good way to keep you motivated while also helping you feel accomplished as you tackle them.

SELF-REFLECTION

Self-reflection gets drawn out of these goals. This is where you can evaluate the goals you have accomplished and how they make you feel. I also like to use this section to evaluate my current mental health state. Self-reflection is a good way to see where you can improve. I usually reflect on things making me happy and what I can do to further improve upon the things I enjoy.

TRIALS & TRIBULATIONS

Trials and tribulations are another great writing point to decipher in your journal. This topic is pretty self-explanatory. This is where you would write about the things weighing you down. By writing them out, you can clear your head of the negative thoughts. Trials and tribulations could include anything from a grudge you are holding on to, something stressing you out, or even a decision you are struggling with. Get it out!

QUESTIONS & QUOTES

Questions and quotes are not a typical thing to write about, but I enjoy it! With questions you can include anything on your mind that is yet unanswered. For me, it usually includes when I am finally going to have my financial struggles solved and when my newly graduated life will finally begin. The quotes aren’t typically included in my everyday reflections, but at least once a week, I like to include an inspirational quote. I typically like to include a quote associated with the theme of the daily reflection.

Better to write for yourself and have no public, than to write for the public and have no self.
