Welcome to Karmen’s Korner! If you are a new reader, be sure to follow my blog via email or WordPress account to get notifications on future posts. If you are a returning reader, then welcome back. This week, I want to discuss what is important in finding a good support system. I am lucky enough to find a support system in family and friends. I find my support system in three of my best friends, my cousins (who are basically like siblings to me), my aunt and uncle (who are like a second set of parents), my parents, and my grandparents. I can’t express enough my love and appreciation for these people. They are always there when I need them, and they always support whatever my heart desires.
Finding a good support system is a very important matter. You need to look for people who are prepared to celebrate your accomplishments as much as they will encourage your endeavors and conquer your setbacks. Being an accounting major, secretly wanting to be a writer would come off to anyone as a bit of a leap of faith. At times, I have definitely questioned whether my blog is the smart thing to approach, but my love of writing has outweighed the concerns. None of which would be possible without the people in my life that have always encouraged me to do what I love. My best friends have played significant roles in this pursuit. They were the first ones I ever talked to about it, and they were quick to encourage. Have I faced negativity? Sure, but positivity has overcome the negative words.
A good support system is how I have made it through four years of college and 2020. I was able to graduate from college this year, but it was of course overshadowed by the pandemic. Therefore, I had a graduation party with my best friends in which we conducted a private ceremony by the pool. I was barefoot and one friend sang the anthem while one videoed and the other handed me my diploma. It was a unique ceremony and it definitely isn’t what I pictured as a college graduation, but it was super special to be surrounded by some of my favorite people. We had an all-nighter in which there was card games, Olive Garden, homemade ice cream, and lots of junk food snacks. It was a memory I will forever cherish.
Surround yourself with people who care about you. Not just those who say it, but those who show it.Alex Elle
