The Devouring Gray

Welcome to Karmen’s Korner! If you are a new reader, be sure to follow my blog to get notifications on future posts (it’s free to create an account). If you are a returning reader, then welcome back. This week comes with a special bonus blog post! I am sitting down to craft my review of The Devouring Gray by Christine Lynn Herman. This series is made up of two books, and if you are a Stranger Things fan, then you will love this series! It is so similar in genre! It will keep you on your toes and will have you looking under your bed before you go to sleep.

The plot of this is about a group of teenagers who are descendants of the founders of the town. They each have a special ability which assists in keeping the town out of reach from the harm the Gray can cause. The Gray is an alternate dimension where the Beast lives. Anyone who encounters it is found dead the next day. In this town, the founder’s descendants are cherished and adored by the public. Little do they know, that each of these kids is not what they appear.

In explanation of the main characters, I will simply include the group of teenagers only.  First, we have my favorite character, Violet Saunders. This character is rough around the edges with a quick wit and a sad back story. Isaac Sullivan is my second favorite with his haunted exterior and dark past. Harper Carisle is next with her sword strapped to her side as she charges into any obstacle she is faced with. Last, but not least, are the Hawthorn siblings, Justin and May. Who could forget Mr. Popular and the girl with the sight of the future, that is always in bright pink?

When I read these books, I absolutely devoured them! It maybe took me a week in total to read both books. Between creepy monsters, an unknown alternate dimension, and kids with abilities, it is extremely hard not to notice the nods to our very own Hawkins, Indiana. Book one is so intense with emotions and trauma running high as these teenagers battle the Beast and the town. The second book keeps you enthralled with the direct aftermath from book one as it picks up where it left off. You also can’t deny the romantic tension as four of them battle feelings and betrayal. All in all, these books are so good, and I cannot recommend them enough. I have honestly never had a book give me nightmares until these. There is nothing like being drug into the gray by tree limbs. 🙂

“Sinners who were led astray,

Wandered through the woods one day,

Stumbled right into the Gray,

Never to return.

Hear the lies our gods will tell,

The prison the Four wove so well,

But listen to us when we say,

Branches and stones, daggers and bones,

Will meet their judgement day.”
