8 Easy Stand-Alone Reads

Welcome to Karmen’s Korner! I always love a good book chat on here, so here I am with another post about books. These books are quick reads and easy enough to get into. These are also my suggestions for people not looking to invest in a long series. These are books without sequels and are not too long. They are perfect for the summer and plenty easy to get invested into. The genres range from fantasy to suspense to horror to traditional YA. Each of these books are high on my list of favorites and well worth the dive in.

The Circle by Dave Eggars

Mae Holland is hired at the Circle, the world’s most powerful internet company. The Circle links users’ personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency.

This book is absolutely insane and has so many plot twists in it. It even kind of opens your eyes to the world we live in now and how far technology has come. This novel has that 1984 by George Orwell kind of vibe. If you do like this book then I suggest you watch the movie with Emma Watson and Tom Hanks.

Suspenseful | Creepy | Intense | Exciting

Bliss by Shay Mitchell and Michaela Blaney

Sophia, Demi, and Leandra are three girls in their 20s trying to navigate their lives. This novel is intoxicating, sexy, worldly, and entertaining. (Kind of has the vibe of The Bold Type)

This book is another book that I read in one day. Overall though I enjoyed this book and reading about these empowering women. If you like shows like The Bold Type then you will enjoy this book. I read this book right after finishing 90210 (the one with Annie, Dixon, Silver, Naomi…) so I pictured Demi as Annie, her boyfriend as Patrick, Leandra as Naomi, and Sophia as Adriana.

Sexy | Intoxicating | Entertaining

Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover

After discovering her boyfriend, Hunter, has been cheating on her with her best friend Tori, Sydney moves in with her mysterious neighbor Ridge. As the story evolves, they find themselves needing each other in more ways than one.

Okay so I am now officially obsessed with Colleen Hoover because of this very book. I read it in two days and was hooked from page one. This book surprised me around every corner and the ending got very unpredictable. If you like After by Anna Todd then you will love this book for sure!

Teen | Romance | Drama | Musical

The Lost by Natasha Preston

Piper and Hazel find themselves kidnapped and thrown into a facility with multiple torture rooms. Each of the kids entrapped gets chosen for a different room each day as they are pushed to their limits. Will they escape?

This is a book that kept me on the edge of my seat for sure! Every time I thought I knew what direction it would take, it went the other direction. The ending was INSANE!!!!!! If you like Criminal Minds then Natasha Preston books are perfect for you.

Suspense | Scary | Intense | Action | Horror | Must Escape

The Perks of Being A Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

Charlie is a bit of a loner and an outsider until he discovers a couple of people who are just as much of a wallflower as he is. Sam and Patrick emerge Charlie into their worlds as he finds is place in this world.

This movie is my favorite movie of all time, so of course the book is amazing! This book is written all from Charlie’s perspective in the form of letters he writes to his “friend.” I just love this book so much! You really just want to become a part of this random group of outcasts. It truly is the land of misfit toys.

Teen | Drama | Entertaining | Alternative

Cursed by Frank Miller and Thomas Wheeler

Nimue finds herself thrown into a world of magic and danger as she is hunted for her blood, her power, and the sword she carries. This novel is a twist on the story of Arthur and Merlin.

I read this book after watching the show on Netflix and it was so good! The book gives you some more background on the show and keeps you hooked from the first page! It kind of tells a background on the story of Arthur and Merlin and how they came in possession of the sword. It truly is a wild ride.

Suspense | Action | Adventure | Peril | Magic

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver

High school senior, Samantha Kingston, dies at a Valentine’s Day party… until she wakes up back in her bed. Samantha is forced to relive the day she died over and over.

This book had me hooked to find out what would happen next. As she goes through each day, she tries living each one differently to pretty much make amends with those she has wronged. She goes through seven days before she discovers just what she had been missing all along. It is truly wild and full of anticipation.

Suspense | Thrilling | YA | Romance | Family

The Fault In Our Stars by John Green

“Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel’s story is about to be completely rewritten.

Amazon Description

This book is one of the few books to ever make me cry. And I mean CRYYYYY! This book has all of the heartbreaking romance you will ever need! I flew through this book and the movie remains one of my favorites to watch when I need some emotional torture.
